Certification is the process by which individual companies (factories, farms and other workplaces) and organizations undergo assessment by a third-party auditor. If the company meets the requirements set out in the standard or code, it can earn a certificate attesting to its compliance. Third-party certification involves an independent assessment declaring that specified requirements pertaining to a product, person, process or management system have been met. MPL Cert undertakes the assessment and evaluation of the accredited certification bodies that conduct SA8000 audits. SAI and other stakeholders, including brands and retailers, only accept and recognize SA8000 certificates issued by accredited certification bodies. In addition, SAAS will only list accredited SA8000 certificates on its website.
In order to be certified, MPL Cert recommends that organizations contact several of the MPL Cert certification bodies to provide a bid for certification services. Auditors from these certification bodies visit facilities and assess corporate practice on a wide range of issues and evaluate the state of a company’s management systems necessary to ensure ongoing acceptable practices. MPL Cert also publishes a certified facilities list, and certificates can be confirmed by the auditing company issuing the certificate.
MPL Cert auditing policy requires that all SA8000 clients have a semi-unannounced audits within their three year certification cycle conducted by the Certification Body.
